Today, 20 new Zentangle Artists create art in Portland, Oregon. Some of the students enter the classroom excited, others are a bit apprehensive. No one quite knows what to expect from the Zentangle Basics Class, taught by me, Pegi Schargel, a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT). [Read more…]

Review: Tombow Storage Tote Bag for Dual Brush Pens, Arts and Crafts Supplies

I recently attended TangleU, a continuing education seminar for Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZTs) in Santa Fe, NM, at the Loretto Inn and Spa. One highlight of the trip for me was winning the grand prize, a Tombow Storage Tote Bag for Dual Brush Pens and Arts and Crafts Supplies that was filled with many great Tombow art supplies! All loaded up, it was fully a $120 value. I had been thinking about buying one before I even won it and, as I expected, I now find myself using the Tombow Storage Tote Bag daily. My review may help you learn if it is something you’ll want to buy. [Read more…]

What can Zentangle do for you?

Let Me Tell You How Zentangle Found Me…

… and how it has changed my life, then you might check it out to see what can Zentangle do for you too! Quite possibly it will change yours!  I had been searching for a creative artistic outlet for years. I tried watercolor, acrylics, pastels, markers, chalk, colored pencils, journaling, cut paper, coloring books and more to no avail. I felt like I was not talented enough and that my creations were not worthy of being called art. That has all changed. One day while in Book-n-Brush in Chehalis, WA buying my sixth or seventh coloring book by Sue Coccia, my husband asked, ‘So what is Zentangle about?’ I dismissively told him, ‘Oh, it is a scam.’ Boy, was I so wrong! Knowing little about what I was saying, I continued, ‘They want you to buy books 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. and order their supplies to do more art.’ He asked me, “So, what is so different about buying this series of books?  Aren’t you doing that now!” I felt embarrassed. It was true, I had been buying a series of books coloring books, and my creative juices were just not being satisfied, but I was experiencing ‘flow’. And there’s more… [Read more…]

Tangles Abound in Cut Lace Newspapers

screenshot
Tangles abound in cut lace paper art!

Tangles and tangle ideas are abundant in this amazing art form!

This art form is absolutely amazing! I can not imagine the patience and amount of time that each newspaper takes before each artwork is complete. It looks as if each perfect cut in the newspaper may use an X-Acto like knife. The fragile lace-cut repetitive patterns are incredible. I particularly enjoy the newspapers that have shaped edges.

As a Zentangle artist, I see so much potential to create new tangles from ideas in this article and at Myriam Dion’s website. See more at:

https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/10/cut-lace-newspapers-myriam-dion/

From Dion’s website, her bio is as follows: Myriam Dion is titular of a master’s degree in visual arts and media at the University of Quebec in Montreal. She was the recipient of the Bursary from the Art Faculty Graduates’s Council, the Jean-Marc Eustache Grant for visual and media arts and the Rollande Guertin-Lys Award in visual and media arts. Since 2013, Dion’s work Was Acquired by the collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto-Québec, TD Bank of Toronto, Claridge, Cirque du Soleil and several private collections in Canada and in the USA. In 2014, she made her first solo exhibition at the gallery She has EXHIBITED Division and in the International Biennial of paper at The Museum Rijswijk (Netherlands). Dion lives and works in Montreal.

Zentangle: B’Twined Tips

Be sure to see the overview and step-outs for the B’Twined pattern before reading on…

Here are some Zentangle B’Twined Tips that you may find useful. Most people commenting on the B’Twined tangle say they love it. When creating a piece of art using B’Twined, it is easy to get into the ‘flow’ of the pattern while focusing on the stroke being drawn. To me, this is the Zen of Zentangle. [Read more…]

Flood the Streets with Art!

Free Art Today! Flood the Streets with Art!

Today I was one of the many artists who participated in the global movement to “Flood the Streets with Art! (part II)” on Black Friday. I created three pieces of Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA’s) that I placed in public locations in Chehalis, WA late this afternoon and earlier tonight. The idea is to create and offer up original art for people to find and keep for free! Pretty cool huh?

Check out the Flood the Streets with Art! link above and look at the wonderful pieces left around the globe! Finding Free Art sure beats standing in line for the Black Friday Madness Sales! My favorite ATC of the three is shown below along with the three different places I left my ATC’s – a fast food place, a movie theater and a drug store.

The type of fine line art I do is called Zentangle.

This first group is so rich that I am limiting it to just 5 resources. They are sure to keep you busy all week! [Read more…]
